Finding Value in Building Enclosure Commissioning
AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, #250
Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) is being implemented on more projects as its popularity increases and organizations such as the USGBC’s LEED v4 require it as part of the building process. Several industry standards and guidelines continue to be developed and revised in an effort to lead project teams through the commissioning process. However, the industry has yet to truly arrive at a consensus on the process and its implementation, resulting in a process that is not always fully leveraged. The BECx process, if implemented properly, can be very valuable. It improves quality, controls risk, and reduces costly changes and delays during construction.
Peter M. Babaian, PE, SE (Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.) will review the current standards and perceptions of the BECx process, outline the specific quality assurance provisions it embodies, and discuss how selecting a suitable scope of BECx can add value to projects and deliver building performance that meets expectations. Peter is the Building Technology Division Head for SGH's Chicago office and leads the Building Enclosure Commissioning Practice at SGH.
