Working With An Architect

If you've never worked with an architect before, you'll likely have questions. We're here to help.

The American Institute of Architects advocates for the value of architecture and gives members the resources they need to do their best work. Our members’ work drives positive change through the power of design.

When you see the initials AIA after an architect’s name, it means that architect is licensed in one or more states and has joined a national organization of 91,000 members dedicated to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and competence. The AIA Code of Ethics guides members’ conduct in fulfilling those obligations.

Becoming a licensed architect requires education (a Bachelor or Master of Architecture); experience under a supervising architect for several years; and examination (a multi-part exam testing knowledge and skills). AIA members and all licensed architects must meet continuing education requirements in order to maintain their membership and their license.

AIA Chicago's "Working with an Architect" and "Ask an Architect" sessions are designed to bring together residential architects and homeowners to talk about choosing the right architect, zoning and building code regulations, making design decisions, and how to avoid costly surprises.

Use the AIA Chicago Architect Finder to find and connect with an architect for your project. And visit the national AIA Firm Directory, too.
