Air Barriers: How to Mitigate Energy and Durability Problems through Critical Interface Detailing
AIA Chicago, 35 E. Wacker Drive, Suite 250, Chicago IL
Jeff Diqui, Building Enclosure Specialist and Architectural Engineer with Sto Corp., presents air and water barriers as they relate to industry performance standards, and the ever-important interface details to mitigate energy and durability issues related to the building enclosure.
Learning Objectives: After completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Recall the causes and effects of air leakage.
2. Summarize air barrier performance standards and code requirements.
3. Differentiate between an air barrier and a vapor barrier.
4. Identify advantages of fluid applied air/water barriers where they could be applicable.
5. Understand critical details within the building enclosure and the importance of maintaining continuity of the air

Speaker: Jeff Diqui holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering with a major in Structural Engineering. He has more than 22 years of experience most of which includes forensic investigations related to moisture intrusion and structural related problems, structural design, building condition assessments, development of repair / rehabilitation designs, and construction observations. Project work was primarily related to the building envelope including various facades, roofing, and/or waterproofing systems. Jeff’s current responsibility is on being a consultative resource to architects, engineers, specifiers, building envelope consultants, contractors, and code officials related to the building enclosure. Jeff is a frequent lecturer on topics nationally regarding the importance of maintaining continuity of air, water, vapor, and thermal controls at the ever important interface detail that requires collaboration.
Jeff is actively involved with the building science and architectural / engineering professions. He is a member of the Building Enclosure Council (BEC), Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), The Institute of Roofing, Waterproofing, and Building Envelope Professionals (RCI), Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Jeff is Program Director for the Building Enclosure Council – Chicago chapter and on the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) Terminations and Flashings Committee.
