Design for Aging: West Pullman School Senior Housing Adaptive Reuse

Virtual

In May of 2013, CPS closed 49 grades schools primarily in under-served communities. Unfortunately, most of those schools still have not been re-purposed and continue to leave a negative mark upon the communities they once served. West Pullman School Senior Housing is an example of what can be accomplished if a creative development team, Federal and State of Illinois historic tax credits, the City of Chicago Department of Housing and the local community all work together to change the status quo.

Speakers: Robert Natke, AIA (UrbanWorks) and Rachel Firgens (formerly with MHA/Ryan)

  • Learn how the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office participated and worked hand in hand with the design team.
  • Learn how the conflicting requirements of local building and accessibility codes and historic preservation requirements can still be solved in an adaptive re-use project.
  • Discuss how additional shuttered schools should become candidates for similar adaptive re-use projects.
