Master Planning and Design for 4 Chicago High Schools
Online
New facilities for Chicago Public Schools high schools and the DePaul College Prep STEAM & Connected Learning High School highlight the complexities that can be faced when planning for secondary schools. When a blend of unusual site features, context and culture get added to the mix, it can inspire unique solutions as showcased through these four schools.
Eben Smith, AIA, Director of Planning & Design at Chicago Public Schools will open the panel discussion of these 4 unique centers of education.
Taft Freshman Academy: The new satellite campus serving 7th-9th grade students is located on the Read Dunning site. The location, which was programmatically active since 1851, has a complex history. Learn how below grade conditions requiring archeological investigations, site context, and neighboring businesses affected the master planning and architectural response to the program.
Speakers: STL Architects; Jose Luis de la Fuente & Luis Collado
Hancock High School – Located in the flight path of Midway Airport, the new replacement high school required a design response that accounted for City zoning and FAA height restrictions and acoustical challenges. Adjacency to an elementary school, inclusion of a Black Box Theater and communal outdoor space also impacted the planning of the facility.
Speakers: Urban Works, Maria Pellot, AIA & Legat, Loren Johnson, AIA
Englewood High School: This new high school brought together students from four aging, underutilized neighborhood high schools on Chicago’s South Side. Learn how the modern campus considered the social impacts to students and the wellness of the community through programmatic features and branding.
Speakers: Moody Nolan, Trey Meyer, AIA & Rachel Cooper, LEED AP BD+C
DePaul College Prep STEAM and Connected Learning High School relocated to the 17-acre former DeVry University campus. Learn how the school planned phased renovations of an existing 134,000 SF facility, new exterior playfields and a future athletic wing addition.
