Passive Architecture All Over Europe: From Passive Skyscrapers to All-Passive City Districts

See 10- and 20-story skyscrapers that meet the Passive House Standard, new ones as well as retrofitted, and learn how their energy intensity is a fraction of comparable US buildings. Europeans are redeveloping entire city districts with passive buildings. We show you the Eurogate district in Vienna – the first Passive House district worldwide. Travel with us to the Bahnstadt district in Heidelberg, Germany, completed in 2015 with new apartments (5,000 dwelling units) plus commercial buildings (7,000 work spaces) and every building meeting the Passive House Standard, the world’s most rigorous energy-efficiency standard. And Brussels, Belgium, where every new building constructed or substantially remodeled since January 1, 2015, must meet the Passive House Standard.
The existing building stock is responsible for about 40% of energy consumption and CO2 emissions worldwide. A thermally enhanced retrofit with at least 85% increase in energy efficiency can be done in 90% of all climatic regions. Engineer and International Passive House Consultant Günter Lang (LANG consulting, Vienna, Austria) is the leader of Passivhaus Austria. He will take a look how municipal/local governments in Europe have done this and what Chicago can do, to design the greenest city architecture.
