Terminal Town: The Evolution of Chicago’s Airports, Bus Depots, and Train Stations, 1939-Present
AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, #250
Professor Joseph P. Schwieterman, executive director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University, will offer a fast-paced presentation on the city’s air, bus and train terminals since 1939 while drawing upon his new book, Terminal Town: An Illustrated Guide to Chicago's Airports, Bus Depots, Train Stations, and Steamship Landings, 1939-Present, and DePaul University’s autumn program, “Terminal Town: Celebrating 75 Years of Travel to the Windy City.” Schwieterman will show how the city’s terminals have been centerpieces of its vast transportation system but also show why the city’s record of preserving its architectural landmarks in transportation is decidedly mixed. He will look ahead at some of the “Terminals of Tomorrow” poised to reshape our transportation system as well as describe the architectural, financial, and political issues affecting their development. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
