The Iconic Room in Contemporary Design
Online
Rooms that move us as memorable experiences can be the conceptual starting points for interior architecture and design. Early 20th century architecture and the open plan supplanted the idea of shaping defined rooms with the idea of continuous space, relying on sectional development and spatial continuity as the most memorable quality of a building interior.
The next program in the Iconic House series of AIA's national CRAN considers what makes a room or a space iconic. The belief that architectural precedents have importance as embodiments of architectural principles, not as models to copy, will be explored. Three architects will each show an iconic room or space that has inspired them, followed by one of their own projects, and discuss the relationship between the two rooms or spaces. A panel discussion will follow to further explore the nature of what makes a room or a space “iconic” in today’s world.
