Tianjin CTF Finance Centre: The Next Generation of Facades for Supertall Towers
AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, #250, Chicago
Thomas Kinzl, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, NCARB, is a Studio Head at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). Licensed in Illinois in 2008, Kinzl leads a studio of over 25 licensed architects and designers on both domestic and international projects. Focused on technical, integrated, and high-performance design, Kinzl has over 15 years of experience with SOM and Murphy/Jahn and has won multiple awards, including honors in the AIA National and Chicago chapters, as well as Research & Development and Architecture-Engineering Awards. His presentation makes the case for an integrated design and inside-out design approach, and discusses the role the façade has in this kind of approach in the present and future.
A focus of the presentation is on the opportunities provided by digital design tools, parametric design, as well as innovative, high-performing curtain wall systems to increase the feasibility of building façades on time and within budget. The two-directionally curved building envelope of the SOM-designed 530-meter-tall Tianjin CTF Finance Centre in Tianjin, P.R. China, will serve as a case study. The 389,980-square-meter project, currently under construction, has been designed to LEED® Gold standards. Sustainable strategies include a high-performance envelope, optimized daylighting, and green landscaping.
