Tour: 465 North Park Drive and Mitigating Building Movement

465 North Park Drive, Chicago

As Chicago towers become increasingly slender, designers are turning to solutions such as water dampers to help mitigate building movement. 465 North Park Drive, an apartment tower under construction in the Streeterville neighborhood, will be using such a device to assure a comfortable environment for tenants.

Our event includes a presentation with the building’s architects, Pappageorge Haymes Partners; engineers Sowlat Engineering; and RWDI, consulting engineer for the tuned damper. RWDI is also involved in two other Chicago towers: Vista, designed by Studio Gang Architects, and One Grant Park, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. The presentation will include a discussion on how RWDI was brought into the design team, the various items the team had to consider, and the tools used in the evaluation.

After the presentation, we will see on-going testing on one of the upper floors.

This tour is limited to 20 AIA Chicago members. Participants must bring hard hats, safety glasses, and wear clothing appropriate for a construction site, including closed-toe shoes.

Meet at the corner of East Illinois and North New streets, across from AMC River East 21 and Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge, no later than 12:15 pm. Participants will be escorted into the construction site, and we will leave promptly at 12:15.
