Tour: Chicago Athletic Association becomes a Hotel
12 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago IL
Tour the soon-to-open Chicago Athletic Club hotel with architects Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. Designed by Henry Ives Cobb circa 1893 as a private athletic club, the landmarked Chicago Athletic Association building is a stunning example of Venetian Gothic architecture. Once featured on Landmarks Illinois’ “Watch List” of historic structures threatened with demolition, CAA’s adaptive reuse sees its transformation into a boutique hotel with 241 keys, multiple dining spaces, and a rooftop terrace overlooking Millennium Park. Extraordinary care was taken to retain elements of the building’s late 19th century architectural details intact and creating a contemporary atmosphere that pays homage to Cobb’s original design. The new hotel is owned by Commune Hotels & Resorts. The hotel interior design is by Roman and Williams (New York City).
