Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Chicago Landmarks
Online
On October 14, 1970, the City of Chicago designated its first two landmarks - Clarke House and Glessner House. Join us on the 50th anniversary of that event as we look back at the history of landmarking in Chicago - an interesting mix of historic preservation and politics. We will also look at the preservation of these two sites over the decades, as well as the emergence of the landmark district - the Prairie Avenue Historic District in which the two houses are located being the first district considered. The presentation will be given by William Tyre, Executive Director and Curator of Glessner House, whose master’s thesis, After the Ball is Over: The Decline and Rebirth of Chicago’s Historic Prairie Avenue Neighborhood, explored these topics in detail.
