Chicago's New Construction Codes: An Introduction for Emerging Architects

AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, Suite 250, Chicago

Knowing the local building code is essential to any design project. Have you followed what’s been happening to Chicago’s building code this year?

In April 2019, the Chicago City Council adopted a modernized code for Chicago, part of a multi-year effort to comprehensively update its construction requirements based on widely-used model codes and standards while maintaining provisions that are well-adapted to local conditions. Phase 2 of Construction Code Modernization will be phased in between June 2019 and August 2020.

Are you ready to become an expert in your firm on these code changes? You may not have had a lot of exposure to Chicago’s previous/current code: here’s a chance to get started on learning the new code.

Grant Ullrich, Assoc. AIA, is Deputy Commissioner in the Chicago Department of Buildings, and he has led the modernization effort. Grant will explain the what, why, and wherefores of this process and its importance for your work as an emerging architect. He will also try to answer your trickiest code-related questions.

Light dinner will be provided so reservations are essential.

>>> Please note that this event is intended for young and emerging architects: the conversation will be directed towards their interests.

AIA Chicago plans to offer more in-depth learning about the code in 2020.

News from the Chicago Dept. of Buildings: DOB is pleased to announce that free, read-only versions of the 2019 Chicago Construction Codes are now available online on the International Code Council's (ICC) website. The new codes bring Chicago's core requirements for the construction, renovation, and maintenance of buildings into much closer alignment with national standards. You can access the online codes by clicking here.

Print versions of the Building Code (Title 14B), Rehabilitation Code (Title 14R), Energy Conservation Code (Title 14N) and Construction Codes Administrative Provisions (Title 14A) are also available for pre-order on the ICC's website at the same link. The ICC anticipates that the books will be ready for shipment in late October.
