Curtain Wall Firestopping: Saving Lives, Protecting Property

Elaine Szot, PE, CSI, Field Engineer with Hilti, will present what it takes to get a fire rating at the edge of slab, specifically for glass and aluminum curtain wall conditions. She will address curtain wall (CW) behavior; code requirements; common terminology for aluminum systems; ASTM test methods; successful containment systems; engineering judgements; back pan and shadow box systems; and other design considerations. Learn what it takes to achieve successful fire containment at the slab edge with glass and aluminum curtain wall systems and how to better understand code requirements, test methods, engineering judgements, installation and contractor issues.
This topic is not well understood by most parties involved, including the designer, review and inspection agencies, glazing contractors, firestop installers, or general contractors. The IBC code is getting stricter, and everyone involved in high rise, curtain wall buildings should be interested in expanding their knowledge and enhancing life safety. If the edge-of-slab firestop is not correct installed, or is not installed at all, lives and property are endangered. The cost of firestop in a new construction project is less than 0.1% of the construction cost, yet if installed correctly, firestop will save lives and property.
