Getting to Know Fire Sprinkler Systems
AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, #250, Chicago
Fire sprinkler systems have been around for over 120 years to protect property and provide life safety. The codes reference three different installation standards and each standard has a different scope. Every system is designed to protect the building, occupants and contents. This course highlights the history, codes, standards and protection level of fire sprinkler systems.
Jeff Hugo from the National Fire Sprinkler Association will give participants an overview of fire sprinkler systems, highlighting a brief history, codes, and various protection levels available. He will introduce us to sprinkler system installation standards and the codes that reference them. He will also reinforce the importance of system design: serving to protect buildings, occupants, and contents. Jeff’s presentation is intended to serve as an introductory course to a longer, more comprehensive Sprinkler System course offered later this year.
- Recognize the various types of sprinkler systems where they are installed or required.
- Explain major differences of sprinkler standards (NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, NFPA 13D) and their uses.
- Discuss sprinkler requirements for specific uses and occupancies.
- Identify where new technology on fire sprinklers systems affect design.
