Façade transparency can connect building occupants to the outdoors, as well as bring daylight and fresh air in. However, glass is also a key driver of energy consumption, besides being a potential source of glare and thermal discomfort. Designing a high performance façade that enhances transparency without increasing a building’s carbon footprint requires understanding the needs of the space and meeting them through one of many alternatives for façade design. This session will cover the basic principles and latest research on façade thermal performance and associate visual comfort and occupant comfort, as well as introduce a variety of façade design strategies that can help a design team find the right façade solution to meet their design needs.
Our speakers will:
- Define high performance facades.
- Provide an overview of factors which affect energy performance of a façade.
- Explain the basic principles behind envelope heat loss, and the critical aspects of tackling thermal bridging and infiltration simultaneously.
- Describe the aspects of facade design that impact thermal comfort.
Speakers:
- Alejandra Menchaca, PhD, LEED AP, WELL AP, Senior Associate, Sustainability – Boston Leader
- Diarmuid Kelleher, P.E., S.E., LEED AP, Associate, Façade Engineering – Chicago Leader
