Classical and Contemporary Homes with Architect James Strickland

Merchandise Mart, Pella Crafted Luxury showroom, Suite 100

James L. Strickland will speak about the residential work of his firm, Historical Concepts LLC (Atlanta and New York). James and his partners combine classical and Southern vernacular design with contemporary living in inventive ways, producing traditional houses informed by a unique sensibility.

A graduate of Yale University’s Graduate School of Architecture, James began his career with real estate development in Florida, later moving back home to Georgia to establish his design/build firm which has built over 200 traditionally inspired homes in the Atlanta area since 1982. Looking to both the vernacular architecture of the region, with its links to craftsmanship and local materials, and to America’s Greco-Roman architectural heritage, Historical Concepts adapts historic forms to contemporary living, creating updated classics. Strickland and his firm are among the most inventive architects designing traditional architecture today. Sharing his knowledge, experience, and passion for architecture, Jim has taught at Georgia Institute of Technology and served as guest critic at the universities of Miami and Notre Dame. The work of Historical Concepts is the subject of Coming Home: The Southern Vernacular House (Rizzoli, 2012).
