Made in Illinois: Selections from the APT Building Technology Heritage Library

How were buildings built and operated in the past? How can we learn how this worked in the past?
Mike Jackson, FAIA, is the APTI champion for the Building Technology Heritage Library, an online library of period architectural trade catalogs and related technical documents. APTI is the Association for Preservation Technology International, a cross-disciplinary, membership organization dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. He explains that being commercial in nature, and designed for relatively short lifespans, trade catalogs are not found in most architectural libraries. “So in 2010 the Association for Preservation Technology in collaboration with the Internet Archive launched the Building Technology Heritage Library (BTHL) to create an online archive of these historic technical documents that makes them useful to the widest audience.”
There are more documents in the BTHL from Chicago than any other city, almost one thousand. Chicago has a great legacy as a center of building construction as well as architecture. Mike’s presentation highlights architectural products and companies from greater Chicagoland.

Speaker: Mike Jackson, FAIA, is a Springfield-based architect and a visiting professor of architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He led the architectural division of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency for more than 30 years and now champions the development of the Association for Preservation Technology's Building Technology Heritage Library, an online archive of pre-1964 AEC documents. Mike writes a blog for Architect magazine highlighting the treasures of the BTHL.
