Meet the jury for the inaugural Roberta Feldman Architecture for Social Justice Award. In the this panel discussion, each juror with discuss their work and highlight projects that align with the goals of the award. Roberta Feldman, PhD will moderate.
Maurice D. Cox is the Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) for the city of Chicago. Celebrated for his experience merging architecture, design and politics through multiple public, private and elected positions, Cox is responsible for leading DPD's economic development, planning and zoning functions while fostering community-improvement initiatives throughout the city. His primary focus is under-invested neighborhoods on the South and West sides.
Katherine Darnstadt, AIA is the founder of Latent Design, a progressive architecture and urbanism firm leveraging civic innovation and social impact to design more equitable spaces and systems. Since founding her practice in 2010, Katherine and her firm have prototyped new urban design systems to advance urban agriculture, support small business, created spaces for youth makers, advanced building innovation, and created public space frameworks. As the co-founder of the recently launched Design Trust Chicago, she is seeking to re-establish a community design studio focused at the city scale.
Professor Sergio Palleroni is a faculty member and director of the Center for Public Interest Design in the School of Architecture at Portland State University and co-founder of PSU's Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative. He also serves as a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Sustainable Solutions and is a founding member and faculty of the federally funded Green Building Research Lab at Portland State University. His research and fieldwork for the last two decades has been in the methods of integrating sustainable practices to improve the lives of underserved communities worldwide.
Helen Slade is a founding member and executive director of Territory NFP. Helen is responsible for strategic initiatives, partnerships, fundraising, marketing, and program frameworks for Territory NFP. She collaborates closely with Territory’s board of directors and community partners to develop young leaders. As a licensed architect, Helen manages all of Territory’s design studio commissions.
Ernest C Wong, fASLA is the founding Principal and President of site design and has been instrumental in the success of the firm and the landscape architecture and urban design profession in the City of Chicago. Under his direction, the firm has won numerous national and international design awards for unprecedented creative design and beautifully detailed urban spaces. Ernie was instrumental in the developement and execution of the 75th Street Boardwalk project.
Foundation board members Walter Street III, AIA and Mary Woolever will also sit on the jury. This program is the third in a series to highlight the AIA Chicago Foundation's new award, the Roberta Feldman Architecture for Social Justice Award. The award intends to honor excellence in built projects and design programs guided by the conviction that access to high quality architecture is not a privilege, it is a human right. It will be launched in 2021 in conjunction with AIA Chicago's Design Excellence Awards.
