Re-Imagining an American Icon: Repositioning Willis Tower

Zoom

Built in 1974 as a towering example of American industry and innovation, Willis Tower reigned for nearly 25 years as the tallest building in the world. Now, nearly 50 years after its construction, Blackstone & EQ Office sought to re-engage the community with this worldwide icon, investing in a diverse mix of new experiences. In the design of the new podium, Gensler worked to carefully balance honoring the legacy of the tower with crafting spaces that would remain fresh and relevant in the years ahead.

In this presentation, Design Director Michael Townsend, AIA, and Technical Designer Marissa Luehring will discuss the strategies employed in this large-scale repositioning and the resulting impact on the exterior and interior of the tower, as well as the surrounding community.
