Residential Design: Here and Now 2022
theMART, 222 West Merchandise Mart Plaza, 1st and 6th floors
Chicago's CRAN brings its annual half-day symposium for architects who specialize in single-family residences back to the Merchandise Mart! Our goal is to help architects stay up-to-date on evolving topics and provide information that can be used immediately in your practice. Join us for lunch and an afternoon of learning. This year's sessions will be:
Session 1: Dual (but not dueling) Topics: Construction Administration and Mentoring
Leaders of four firms discuss construction administration and mentoring for Construction Administration. What CA methods work, which ones don’t, and why? How can residential design firms avoid common pitfalls during CA? How do you mentor your staff to develop CA competency - and how does that fit into your firm's larger mentoring goals?
Speakers:
- Erica Weeder, Liederbach & Graham Architects
- Scott Crowe, AIA ,Thomas Shafer Architects LLC
- Robert Zuber, AIA, Morgante Wilson Architects
- Moderator: Amy Scruggs, AIA, Scott Simpson Design + Build
Session 2: Understanding and Simplifying Best Practices for Window Installation
As insulation values rise and building envelopes tighten up in today’s residential construction, architects face an increased risk of mold and rot issues related to window installation missteps. This session explores the building science, process, details, and products behind current best practices for window installation in a methodical and clear manner, designed to give architects the resources and understanding to confidently detail windows to perform fault-free throughout their lifecycle.
Speakers:
- Mark Sala and Matt Weber, Assured Corp.
- Bill Bahn, Hightower Labs. Inc.
- Moderator: Sig Froelich, Assoc. AIA, Sig Froelich Design/Build
Session 3: The Inspiration We Need: The Architecture (and Everything) of Edgar Miller
Edgar Miller (1899-1993) was a self-taught and apprenticeship-trained artist and master craftsman, a true “Renaissance Man” of the modern era, who lent his skills to a multitude of projects in advertising, packaging, interiors, and architecture. Zac Bleicher, Executive Director of Edgar Miller Legacy, will focus on Miller's work within architecture. Trish VanderBeke, AIA, will provide an architect's perspective on Miller which she garnered not just from working on spaces designed by Miller but from doing that work in Miller's Carl Street Studios for more than 20 years.
Speakers:
- Zac Bleicher, Edgar Miller Legacy
- Trish VanderBeke, AIA, P.K. VanderBeke, Architect
- Moderator: Greg Howe, AIA, Searl Lamaster Howe
