Residential Practice: Here and Now

Conference Center adjacent to AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, Suite 260, Chicago IL

The AIA/Chicago Area Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) has planned a half-day event for architects who specialize in single-family homes. This event will cover three topics: how to find clients and promote the firm; using Building Information Modeling in a small custom residential firm; and specifications in custom homes. Our goal is to help architects stay up-to-date on evolving topics and give them information they can put to use immediately.

Session 2: BIM for Custom Residential Architecture: A Day in the Life of Revit
Speaker: Craig Cernek, AIA, LEED AP, ArchiBuild Group
Comments: Scott Crowe, AIA, Thomas Shafer Architects LLC

We've all heard about parametric families, 3-D modeling, and the BIM revolution, but is all of this complex software worth the sizable investment in time, treasure, and education for custom residential architecture? Craig Cernek is the founder of a design/build firm specializing in custom residential architecture and light commercial buildings. As a 15 -year veteran of Autodesk’s Revit, Craig will demonstrate how he has leveraged this building information modeling software to document existing buildings and take projects through schematic design, design development, and construction documents phases as well as creating renderings. He will help you determine for yourself if it makes sense for you and your firm.

Session 3: Specifying for Residences: How to Get What Your Clients Want
Speaker: Renee Doktorczyk, FAIA, CCS, CSI, SCIP, ArchiTech Consulting, Inc.
Comments: Nate Lielasus, AIA, Northworks Architects + Planners

Specifications are 50% of the contract documents, so why are they woefully ignored or under-appreciated by so many designers? Renee Doktorczyk, owner an architectural specification consulting firm, has been writing specifications for more than 25 years. She will explain the importance of specifications and why you need them. Renee will clarify differences between custom residential specifications and specifications for commercial projects. Creation of a master office specification will be explained, including the differences between sheet specs and book specs, along with the pros and cons of each. Renee will explain how she works with architects and the process from the specifier’s viewpoint. Questions are encouraged.
