Resilient Roof Systems
AIA Chicago, 35 E. Wacker Drive, Suite 250, Chicago IL
For the majority of buildings, the roof system is critical to the overall performance and success of the building envelope. Not only should the roof be the first line of defense against the weather and weather events, it should provide an energy-efficient, long lasting, durable solution. James Kirby, AIA, will discuss how to achieve a resilient roof system. The technical basis for the presentation will be RoofPoint (CM). RoofPoint is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing to provide a means for building owners and designers to select nonresidential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits. While used as a roof rating system, RoofPoint can also be an important design tool for resilient, energy efficient, long-term performing roof systems. Jim will also discuss how the RoofPoint program can be used by architects to design new and replacement roofs.
The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization whose mission is to promote the development and use of environmentally responsible, high performance roof systems and technologies. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Center serves as a forum to draw together the entire roofing industry to the common cause of raising public awareness of the strategic value of our nation's roofs in reducing energy consumption, mitigating environmental impact and enhancing the quality of the builds in which we live and work.
Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also earned a Graduate Certificate of Sustainable Design and Construction from Boston Architectural College.
