Stuart Smith: Arup Projects in the UK and Around the World
AIA Chicago, 35 East Wacker Drive, #250
Stuart Smith, Structural Leader of the London office of Arup, is a creative and innovating thinker in the field of building engineering design. He works with a team of multi-disciplinary engineers, engaged in the design of some of the world’s more interesting and challenging building projects. He will discuss his experience with cutting edge technology and trends influencing current and future building design.
Last year, Stuart was part of the team for “A New House for London,” a shipping container house built for the London Design Festival in September. “A New House” was collaborative project that challenged land-use thinking and illustrated how under-utilized brownfield sites could be used to locate prefabricated, adaptable spaces, suitable for modern urban living. Prefabricated housing can provide an accessible, affordable and appropriate use of such sites and possibly could prove to be an interim solution to the lack of housing within the capital. The cost of this new home is just 10% of the average London property. Arup designed a simpler, more resilient low voltage direct current (DC) energy network for the container home which could operate independently of the main grid.
Light refreshments at 5:30 pm; program starts at 6:00 pm.
