The Hospital in the Urban Habitat: Achieving Livable Cities

Global Chicago showroom, Merchandise Mart, Suite 1035

How can healthcare providers, civic leaders, and non-traditional providers coordinate community health goals, providing effective wellness opportunities and reducing healthcare costs?

Background: For many years, placemaking trends explored concepts with achieving livable cities. In parallel, healthcare systems have been exploring how to reach out to the community they serve. Challenges include (a) overcoming inequity in healthcare access; (b) motivating population in healthy living; (c) determining ROI on strategies; and (d) achieving reduction in healthcare costs.

Drivers: The drivers in livable city concepts stem from civic interest in attracting and retaining residents and businesses to fuel economic development. The drivers for healthcare institutions are responding to changes in healthcare reimbursement (moving from fee for service to a proactive care model). The goal is improved community health and avoiding development of costly chronic illnesses.

Solutions: we will explore the provision of community health from three perspectives: the traditional healthcare provider, addressing changes in reimbursement; community leadership and the advancement of livable city concepts; the perspective of non-traditional healthcare providers entering the reimbursable healthcare market.

Join us for this presentation and conversation exploring expansion of the options for provision of healthcare in the future. Bring a colleague or a client to join the conversation. If you work with government officials who are in the public health field, please bring them too. Stantec has been exploring this trend towards widening the options for healthy living, and we'd like to enlarge the conversation in Chicago.
