Tour: Lycée Français de Chicago

The Lycée Français de Chicago is a new 85,000 square foot LEED-certified K-12 school in Lincoln Square which was awarded to STL Architects in the summer of 2012.
During this tour, Jose Luis de la Fuente, Luis Collado, AIA and Janelle Moody, AIA from STL Architects will discuss how the design takes advantage of the site to create an academic campus 3.8 acres in size that includes a private drive and college-preparatory facility serving up to 800 students with 41 classrooms; laboratories for art, science and music; a cafeteria; a gymnasium; a library; administrative offices; two separate playgrounds; a soccer field; and ample green space for future growth as well as outdoor athletic activities.
Special emphasis will be placed on a discussion of the design of the atrium. The majestic four-story atrium visually and physically connects various academic levels. The atrium is a space that symbolizes the shared sense of social and global responsibility intrinsic to the curriculum and community of the Lycée Français de Chicago. This central connection among floors reflects an environment of interconnectivity among students, faculty, and administrators.
STL Architects will discuss how close collaboration during the design phase with Bulley & Andrews, the Construction Manager at Risk, allowed the project to remain within the owner’s modest construction budget. The project is an example of how a deliberately restrained design and an economy of expressive means can nevertheless generate magnificent architecture rooted in simplicity and in the essential qualities inherent to any great building: light and air, proportion and color, circulation and order. Roger McCarron from Project Management Advisors, Inc., and Douglas Lyons and Eric Véteau from the Lycée Français de Chicago will also speak to our group.
