Transformative Visions for Smarter Buildings & Strengthened Neighborhoods

Focus on design innovation at a variety of scales and projects that enhance the resiliency, sustainability and beauty of our built environment in Chicago and elsewhere. Our distinguished panel of inspired practitioners will describe how they and their firms are re-framing these challenges and re-imagining their projects. They have moved beyond incremental steps to a broader, holistic approach, exploring new design languages with expressive form to create transformative project solutions. The presenters and sessions will show how designers are re-conceptualizing urban infrastructure and public spaces as collection zones for social interaction that strengthen community and culture. And they are re-purposing building components and site elements to integrate and optimize a wide range of carbon drawdown strategies for smarter buildings, healthier neighborhoods and more resilient urban ecosystems.
We have two moderated sessions, consisting of project presentations followed by panel discussions. Each program will highlight projects of varying scale and context, each with defining characteristics drawn from a range of holistic strategies, and each an example of transformative visions for resilience and carbon drawdown. Matthew Messner, Midwest Editor of The Architect’s Newspaper, will moderate the conference. John Zukowsky, author and former curator of architecture at The Art Institute of Chicago, will deliver introductory remarks.
