Two Perspectives on the Future of Healthcare

Online

AIA Chicago’s Healthcare Knowledge Community has partnered with SmithGroup to discuss two perspectives on the future of healthcare. The first looks at brick and mortar solutions that healthcare centers can adopt to futureproof for capacity surges. The second study proposes a conceptual solution to integrate primary care into a city’s existing transit infrastructure. Both publications will be shared during the presentation, and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the proposals with the authors.

A POST-PANDEMIC FRAMEWORK FOR FLEXIBILITY & FUTURE PROOFING

During the ongoing lockdowns in the COVID-19 pandemic, most organizations adapted to ensure that their work could continue. Many simply shifted existing processes to remote work settings, trying to match what had been done before the pandemic. This worked well for most industries and processes—but healthcare delivery is different. Ambulatory Care Centers, a vital link in Healthcare delivery continuum, were shut down due to concerns about virus spread and lack of intensive care treatment.

SmithGroup designers worked to identify resilient design strategies that could allow ambulatory care centers to remain open and operational during a future epidemic or pandemic. The study identifies two building capacity types: regular capacity and surge capacity.

FARE2CARE –  Healthcare Deign Magazines 2020 Breaking Through Design Competition Finalist

The United Nations says that primary healthcare can meet 90 percent of a community’s health needs —but for this to occur, people need access to that primary healthcare. Getting good quality healthcare can depend on where you live and how much time you have to attend various medical appointments. Delayed or deferred preventative and primary care can lead to poorer health and outcomes today —leading to an estimated $67 billion in additional healthcare costs each year in the US.

SmithGroup designers looked at the train tracks that crisscross major cities and small towns across the country and came up with a radical concept that helps to bring care to the patients, rather than bring the patients to the care. This is Fare2Care (F2C).
