Understanding the New Reality - Impacts of Mental Health on Healthcare Design

Webinar

Mental Health is a journey, not a destination. The impacts of mental health are wide and deep. Twenty percent of all American adults experience mental illness each year, and the second leading cause of death among people aged 10 to 34 is suicide. Mental illness affects all patient groups, from children to the very old, and results in a wide range of disorders requiring treatment. We must also recognize the significant impact of the pandemic on our mental health and the importance of increasing access to timely and effective care for those who need it. The growing evidence in the media of the issues points to a greater public awareness and willingness to confront the need for greater mental healthcare to be available on several levels.

Healthcare designers are challenged to create adaptive platforms that encourage mental wellness and evoke positive outcomes. The wide variety of mental illness diseases makes creating the appropriate environment a challenge for today’s healthcare architects. The needs of each patient population vary widely, and mental healthcare can be provided in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. There are general issues that apply to the design of these environments, including:
• Patient and Staff Safety
• Access to Levels of Care
• Impacts of Codes and Standards on Environments of Care

Three projects will be showcased to illustrate how the complex demands of mental healthcare impacted the design of the healing environments, including: 1) McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital’s Geropsychiatry unit, 2) Ascension St. Alexius’ Medical Center Behavioral Health ED Annex and 3) Ascension St. Joseph Chicago Hospital’s Eating Disorder Unit.
