Your Business and Your Life: An Introduction to Transition Planning

AIA Chicago, 35 E. Wacker Drive, Suite 250

When do most people plan for retirement?

     The day after they retire

     The day before they retire

What do you mean by “retirement”?

#1 is a very common answer, but it’s not the best one. Let’s see if we can do better.

Running a firm is an all-encompassing venture. Take a little time to consider what may be down the road when you decide you are ready to stop running your business. What does that mean for the enterprise you have created and for yourself? Are you personally and financially prepared for the third act of your life?

Many business owners focus on revenue and not value creation. Transition planning asks and answers all the business, personal, financial, legal, and tax questions involved in managing a privately owned business. It includes contingencies for illness, burnout, divorce, and death. Its purpose is to maximize the value of the business at the time of exit, minimize taxes, and ensure the owner is able to accomplish all his or her personal and financial goals in the process.

Donna Gaines and Charles Roberson, CEPA, of Chicago-based Riverview Consultants Inc. will present their approach to transition planning: the conscious effort to grow enterprise value in a manner that enables the efficient conversion of that ownership into personal financial freedom and peace of mind. This program will focus on small and medium-sized firms, but anyone who is thinking about starting their own practice is encouraged to attend as well.

A short worksheet will be sent to registrants to help them think about the topic and their personal goals prior to the presentation.

Note:  Transition planning is a very personal process. This presentation will be general in nature. Specific questions can be answered personally. Riverview Consultants is available to provide individual presentations upon request.
